Soviet Moscow Military District's
Tactical Air Force in January 1, 1973

During the ColdWar, two aircraft factory on the Moscow Military District's territory manufactured Mikoyan and Gurevich types. The GAZ-21 (State Aviation Plant No.21) at Gorky and the GAZ-30 at Moscow-Lukhovitsy. In the late sixties and early 1970s, the new MiG-21 Fishbed, MiG-23 Flogger and MiG-25 Foxbat tactical planes were handed over first to the Moscow Military District’s air regiments.

In 1969, the 47th independent Guard Reconnaissance Air Regiment received the high-speed MiG-25R and MiG-25RB Foxbat reconnaissance type. In 1970, the first MiG-23S Flogger-A tactical fighter arrived at 32 Guard Fighter Air Regiment, followed by MiG-23 (Type 1971) in 1971 and then MiG-23M Flogger-B in 1972. In the early seventies, the MiG-17s of the 234 Guard Fighter Air Regiment was replaced with MiG-21SM Fishbed-J and MiG-21MF/MT Fishbed-J/K export fighter aircraft.

While the 32nd Guard Fighter Air Regiment, 274th Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment, and 47th independent Guard Reconnaissance Air Regiment were active combat units the 234th Guard Fighter Air Regiment was an air display unit. This unit promoted the Soviet Tactical Air force at home and abroad. They have traveled several times to Sweden, France and Finland, but they also received foreign delegations.
