The Soviet High Command of the South-West Direction's sharpest sword was the 24th Air Army. Six bomber air regiment, with a total of 180 Su-24 Fencer all-weather bomber aircraft belonged to it. This was a huge bomber force, which was supposed to attack NATO targets at low altitude in the eighties. The 24th Air Army's 180 pcs of Su-24 Fencer was southern Europe's biggest tactical air striking force!

The 24th Tactical Air Army took over the bomber regiments from the neighboring air army between 1980 and 1987. Six regiments of Su-24 Fencer were taken over, four from the 14th Tactical Air Army (7th, 230th 314th and 941st regiments forbid), one from the 36th Tactical Air Army (727th Regiment) and the one from the 26th Tactical Air Army (953rd regiment).

From the six regiment, three used modern Su-24M Fencer-D type. The Su-24M Fencer-D was able to do aerial refueling.

The Su-24 Fencer bombers were escorted by long-range fighters. In the early eighties the 17th Tactical Air Army and the 14th Tactical Air Army handed over three fighter air regiments for the 24th Air Army. The three regiments was received by the 138th Fighter Air Division.

They planned to equip two regiments with Su-27 Flanker-B, while one regiment will use the old MiG-23MLD Flogger-K type. First the 831st Fighter Air Regiment received a long range Su-27s in 1985.

The new Su-27 Flanker-B would have been able to follow the Su-24 Fencer bombers all the way. It had similar abilities as the USAF's F-15 Eagle.

The 190th and the 168th Fighter Air Regiments served in Afghanistan between 1986 and 1988.

The 24th Air Army received the reconnaissance and electronic countermeasures regiments from the 5th and the 14th Tactical Air Army.

The 118th independent Air Regiment for Electronic Warfare's two Yak-28PP Brewer-E and one Su-24MP Fencer-F squadron supported the Su-24 bomber divisions. The Su-24MP Fencer-F electronic countermeasures squadron was only a test unit.

 The exact sub-variants used aren't known *
