Soviet 42nd Guard Fighter Bomber Air Regiment's life at Żagań airport in 1980
 

Between 1970 and 1973, the 239th Fighter Air Division of the Soviet 4th Tactical Air Force replaced the old MiG-21 tactical fighter with the new MiG-21SM Fishbed-J and MiG-21SMT Fishbed-K type. The 42nd Guard Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment received these old silver MiG-21 aircraft. In 1972 they began the conversion to the second-hand MiG-21PF/PFM Fishbed-D/F variant. Usually, they used free fall traditional and nuclear bomb, unguided rockets and GP-9 cannon pod with 23 mm GSh-23 cannon.

At the end of the seventies, it was centrally ordered to camouflage the previously silver colored MiG-21PFM Fishbed-F  fighters. The regiment's training planes in 1980 were still silver colored MiG-21UM Mongol-B type.

The old MiG-21PFM Fishbed-F nuclear bomber was used by them the longest. The 42nd Guard Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment replaced their vintage MiG-21PFM type to Su-24 Fencer bombers in 1983.
