The Soviet Kilpajarv airport in the seventies.

The Soviet 941st Fighter Air Regiment PVO received Su-9 ‘Fishpot-A’ interceptor type in 1959. The Su-9 was a great point defense fighter in the sixties. They defended Murmansk town together with several anti-aircraft missile regiments and brigades.

The Kilpajarv airport was the most northwestern airport in the Soviet Union. Therefore more Soviet air regiment relocated temporarily here. Example the 10th Air Army's Tu-128 ‘Fiddler’ units. Here they were able to take advantage of the long-range of the model, close to the NATO border.

The Soviet 941st Fighter Air Regiment PVO used the Su-9 ‘Fishpot-A’ interceptor type for 19 years then received modern MiG-23M ‘Flogger-B’ fighter with look-down/shoot-down capacity weapon system in 1978. This regiment was the last Soviet air defense regiment which got factory-new MiG-23M type. From 1978 this subversion was only exported to the Warsaw-Pact country as MiG-23MF ‘Flogger-B’. The 941sr regiment crew traveled to the 148th Air Defence Training Center for retraining in January 1979.

During the retraining two fighter regiment substituted on the Kilpajarv airport. Early that year the 524th Fighter Air Regiment PVO with MiG-25P ‘Foxbat-A’ interceptor, then in the second half of the year the 431st Fighter Air Regiment PVO from Afrikanda airport with Su-15TM ‘Flagon-F’ fighter planes.
