10th Independent Air Defence Army
on January 1, 1988

In the eighties, the 10th Independent Air Defence Army was the most advanced air defense army in the Soviet Union! Six anti-aircraft missile brigades received S-300PT/PS/PM 'SA-10A/D/E Grumble' Soviet long-range surface-to-air missile system to replace older SA-75 Volhov 'SA-2 Guideline' model.

Between 1983 and 1992 the 10th Air Defence Army received more than 120 MiG-31 'Foxhound' and about 70 Su-27 'Flanker' modern twin-engine long-range interceptor aircraft type! Meanwhile, the older Tu-126 ‘Moss’ airborne early warning and control aircraft type were replaced by new Beriev A-50 'Mainstay' Soviet airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft type over the Barents Sea.

In the eighties, three fighter air regiments (431, 265 and 57) of the 10th Independent Air Defence Army used the older Su-15TM 'Flagon-F' traditional interceptor type. The 57th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO began to replace their Su-15TM aircraft to new MiG-31B air-to-air refueling capable aircraft type in 1990. Both photos were taken at the Afrikanda airport about the pilots and their Su-15TM ‘Flagon-F’ fighter aircraft of the 265th Fighter Air Regiment PVO in 1993.
