Life at the arctic Amderma city and airport in the eighties.

During peacetime, the 72nd Guard Fighter Air Regiment's task was to prevent or at least disrupt reconnaissance flights of NATO over the Kara Sea. The regiment's personnel were very busy in the second half of the eighties. The tension was constant in the northern region.

For example, the 72nd regiment received 203 alarms only in 1987! During these, they escorted the NATO reconnaissance aircraft flying along the USSR border, including the interception of Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird 69 times.

The following pictures of the 72nd regiment were taken between 1984 and 1987.

The climate of the arctic region at the Amderma town is characterized by long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The military crews arrived here with their family. Usually, the personnel was changed every three years.
