Soviet 156th Fighter Bomber Air Regiment in Afghanistan between 1983 and 1984.

The 156th Fighter Air Regiment moved to Mary-2 airfield in May 1952 and become air defense air unit on August in the Turkestan Military District. During 20 years of the constant guard in the skies above Turkmenistan. The 156th regiment flew  MiG-17, MiG-19, Yak-25, Yak-28 and Su-15 interceptor aircraft in the sixties and seventies.

In 1980, the 156th regiment joining the Soviet Tactical Air Force, where it was re-designated as a fighter-bomber air regiment. The unit was in the process of converting from Su-15 Flagon interceptor to the Su-17M3 fighter-bomber type in 1981.

In support of the Soviet Invasion in Afghanistan, the 156th regiment deployed one squadron Su-17M3 Fitter-H bomber from Mary-2 airfield to Kandahar airport, Afghanistan, on May 11. 1983.
 

The squadron of 156th regiment lost six Su-17M3 bomber aircraft and two pilots in between May 1983 and October 1984. The pilots did not have any experience in close air support.

• On August 18, 1983, the combat loss of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Kostyaev Valery Aleksandrovich took off from the Kandahar airfield with his leader. The target was in the region of 20 km northeast of Kandahar. After the attack, he crashed.
• December 19, 1983, the accident of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Aleksenko Alexander ejected when he took off Bagram airport.
• On January 17, 1984, the combat loss of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Nagibin Nikolai Fedorovic started from the airfield Shindant. This was his first combat mission in Afghanistan. The group of aircraft: 2 MiG-21bis (927th regiment from Bagram) and four Su-17M3 Fitter-H attacked target the struck 35 kilometers south of Shindand in a mountainous region. After bombing the Su-17M3 Fitter-H aircraft at the conclusion of a dive collided with a mountain and exploded. The plane was probably shot, the pilot died.
• April 9, 1984, military loss of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Alexander Mukhin commander of the 2nd air squadron from Kandahar airfield.
• On April 25?21, 1984, the combat loss of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Sokolov Sergey Alexandrovich took off from Bagram airfield. In horizontal flight H = 1500m, he felt a strong blow on the plane. The pilot catapulted, but the resource helicopter delayed 20 minutes. The pilot was unconscious. He had a grenade in his clenched hand. The ambulance took the grenade out of his hand and thrown it far away.
• On May 13, 1984, the combat loss of the Su-17M3 Fitter-H - Buzov Gennady took off from Shindant airfield. The target in the lineup 15 km south-west of Herat. After dropping the bombs from horizontal flight, the pilot felt a strong blow in the tail section (a clear sign of MANPADS hitting). The pilot ejected and after 15 minutes, was rescued with Mi-8 helicopters.

Then, between 1984 and 1988, the 156th regiment still participated in cross-border bombings, they attacked North-Afghan target with Su-17M3 Fitter-H bomber aircraft from Mary-2 airport.
