New Soviet reconnaissance aviation units in the Soviet Far East
during the Late 1960s and Early 1970s
In the first half of the 1960s, only two reconnaissance aviation squadrons belonged to the 1st Special Far Eastern Tactical Air Army. The 240th Independent Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron was stationed at the Novorossiya-1 airfield equipped with IL-28R ‘Beagle’ aircraft, while another reconnaissance squadron operated MiG-15bisR ‘Fagot-B’ and later MiG-21R ‘Fishbed-H’ types at the Galenki airfield
Due to the deterioration of Sino-Soviet relations, the expansion of tactical reconnaissance aviation units in the Far Eastern Military District began in 1967. Personnel and equipment were redeployed from the European part of the Soviet Union to the Soviet Far East, and three new reconnaissance regiments were established:

Between 1967 and 1981, these three Soviet reconnaissance regiments monitored Chinese troop movements along the Sino-Soviet border in the Soviet Far East. In the seventies utilizing more advanced Yak-28R ‘Brewer-D’ and MiG-25RB ‘Foxbat-B’ aircraft types as well.

The photos above show the personnel and Il-28 aircraft of the 799th Independent Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment at Novorossiya-1 airfield surrounded by hills between 1967 and 1975.
In 1975, the 799th Independent Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment began transitioning to the Yak-28 reconnaissance aircraft. Later that year, the unit relocated to Ozernaya Pad / Kremovo airfield. It was here that the regiment received its Yak-28R 'Brewer-D' reconnaissance, Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' electronic warfare and Yak-28U trainer aircraft. All of these Yaks were second-hand airframes, consolidated from various other units.
Shortly after, the regiment relocated once again. Moving to a new base at Varfolomeevka airfield in the late 1970s. At this new location, alongside the Yak-28s, the first squadron continued to operate the legacy Il-28 ‘Beagle’ aircraft too until the early 1980s.
