Soviet MiG-25 ‘Foxbat’ with bomb weapons at Kolomija airfield

The reconnaissance/strike MiG-25RB ‘Foxbat’ version can carry up to 4,000 kg (8,820 lb), later 5,000 kg (11,020 lb)) of free-fall bombs. The MiG-25 used two-two 100 kg (200 lb) flare bombs in pairs under the wings, and four FAB-500T bombs in tandem pairs under the fuselage.

After the release in horizontal flight at high altitude, usually at approximately 65,000ft (20,000 meters), the FAB-500T bomb, which weighed 1,000 lb (500 kg), could glide in a ballistic trajectory several dozen miles/kilometers. Aiming is performed without direct visual contact with the target, but by the target's position as calculated by the navigation/attack system. This is made possible through pre-flight loading of target coordinates into the onboard digital navigational computer, which is part of the Peleng DM nav/attack system that provides automatic flight to the target and either precise auto bomb release or camera and ELINT equipment activation as required. FAB-500T heat-resistant high-explosive bombs are specially designed for release at speeds over Mach 2 and feature a specially strengthened body to withstand the high temperatures (up to 300°C), caused by friction of the bomb's body against the high-speed airflow. In case of war, the trio of Soviet 48th independent Guards Reconnaissance Air Regiment's MiG-25RBs was to bomb the large targets of NATO countries.
